US filings for unemployment aid at a 5-week high
WASHINGTON (AP) ? The number of Americans seeking unemployment benefits rose last week to a five-week high, evidence that the job market remains sluggish.
The Labor Department said Thursday that weekly applications for unemployment aid rose 10,000 to a seasonally adjusted 383,000. The four-week average, a less volatile measure, increased for the first time in a month to 374,500.
Economists were disappointed by the data, particularly when coupled with a separate report Thursday that showed only modest hiring by private businesses in May. On Friday, the government will report on May hiring by private and public employers.
"The jobs data were not reassuring ahead of tomorrow's ... report," said Jennifer Lee, an economist at BMO Capital Markets.
Applications had declined to roughly 370,000 for four weeks. That drop suggested that hiring could pick up in May. When applications drop below 375,000, it typically suggests that hiring is strong enough to reduce the unemployment rate.
Thursday's data doesn't figure into the May employment report, to be released Friday. That report is based on figures gathered in the middle of the month. Analysts expect it will show that employers added 158,000 jobs, while the unemployment rate remained 8.1 percent.
That would be an improvement from April, when employers added only 115,000 jobs. But it would be slower than the blistering pace set this winter, when the economy generated an average of 252,000 jobs a month from December-February.
The number of people receiving benefits fell, partly because extended benefits programs are ending in many states. About 6.1 million people received benefits in the week that ended May 12. That's down 30,750 from the previous week.
Separately, a private survey showed that businesses boosted hiring only slightly in May. Payroll provider ADP says businesses added 133,000 jobs. That's slightly better than the revised total of 113,000 jobs it reported for April, which was the weakest in seven months. The report covers only hiring in the private sector; it excludes government jobs.
The unemployment rate has fallen from 9.1 percent in August to 8.1 percent last month. Part of the reason for the drop is that employers added 1.5 million jobs during that time. But it has also declined because some people gave up looking for work. The government counts people as unemployed only if they're actively looking for a job.
Economists have cautioned that a warm winter led companies to move up some hiring and accelerate other activity that normally wouldn't occur until spring. That gave the appearance that the economy had strengthened in January and February and weakened in early spring.
Recent economic indicators, meanwhile, have been mixed.
Consumer confidence fell sharply in May to its lowest level since January, the Conference Board said Tuesday. Americans were more worried about jobs, housing and the stock market. Lower confidence could lead consumers to cut back on their spending.
But that survey contrasted with a report, released Friday, by Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan that found consumer sentiment rose to its highest level in four and a half years.
Economists said the difference between the two is partly explained by timing. The Conference Board's survey was completed by May 16, just before stock prices leveled off after falling steadily. Gas prices also fell further after the survey was completed. The University of Michigan's report continued until later in the month and would have captured both of those trends.
There are signs the housing market is slowly improving. Home prices rose in March from the previous month in most major U.S. cities for the first time in seven months, according to the Standard & Poor's/Case-Shiller home price index. Prices rose in 12 of the 20 cities it tracks. Some of the increase was due to the start of the spring home selling season. The month-to-month price changes aren't seasonally adjusted.
In April, sales of both previously occupied homes and new homes rose near two-year highs. Builders are gaining more confidence in the market as traffic from potential buyers rises, according to an industry survey.
Building permits have risen in recent months, though they fell in April from nearly a two-year high, the National Association of Realtors said Wednesday.
Long-term mortgage rates have never been lower. The average rate on the 30-year fixed mortgage fell to 3.78 percent last week, the lowest since long-term rates began in the 1950s.
Still, the pace of home sales remains well below healthy levels. Economists say it could be years before the market is fully healed.

Channel Islands Earthquake Felt In Malibu, West LA, Culver City & San Fernando Valley
By Associated Press
MALIBU, Calif. (AP) -- A small earthquake has jolted the Southern California coast but there are no reports of damages or injuries.
The U.S. Geological Survey says in a preliminary report that the magnitude-4.0 quake struck in the Channel Islands region at 10:14 p.m. Tuesday.
The USGS says the earthquake was centered 30 miles southwest of Malibu and was felt throughout the Los Angeles area, especially in West LA, Santa Monica and the San Fernando Valley.
Sheriff's and fire officials say there are no reports of damages or injuries from the quake, and the Los Angeles Fire Department is not in earthquake mode.
Brandon David Wilson, a school teacher who lives in the Culver City area, said on Twitter that he felt the earthquake, but it was "just a sharp jolt. No big whoop."

Jason ?Mayhem? Miller retires from fighting at UFC 146 loss and dismissal from UFC
Jason "Mayhem" Miller is a man of his word.
The now-unemployed fighter said before his bout with C.B. Dollaway that if he'd lost, he'd retire. He dropped a decision at UFC 146 on Saturday, then was cut from the UFC.
On Monday's "MMA Hour," he said he's walking away from fighting after winning 23 bouts and losing nine.
"Every fighter gives the same answer when they say they're retired. Pretty much every fighter says 'I'm retired until I need money.' I'm a pretty smart dude, I have other avenues open to me."
Miller hosts MTV's "Bully Beatdown," and is, as he puts it, a smart dude. He gets business and selling his own brand, which is why he uses the flamboyant entrances that Dana White blasted.
He also shed light on the "backstage incident" White referred to when discussing Miller's dismissal at the UFC 146 post-fight press conference.
"It was my mask," Miller said. "Burt suddenly started yelling about my mask. I had a gas mask for the troops underneath my paper bag, and Burt started telling me right as I'm walking out for the fight. I'm trying to get focused instead of arguing about a paper bag. Maybe it was my fault for, I don't know, I thought we had an understanding once I start walking out to the cage that now I'm working, but obviously we're not on a playing field of mutual respect."
He is referring to UFC backstage director and jack of all trades Burt Watson. UFC events being the well-run events they are has much to do with Watson and the respect fighters afford him. If there is just one rule that supersedes every other in the UFC, it's listen to Burt. Fighters, employees, media and anyone doing business with the UFC knows this. Whether Miller is right or wrong is not important.
Now, Miller will have both the time and freedom to figure out his next move. He tweeted on Tuesday:
Don't worry. I'm not dead. Just analyzing it all so I can share my human experience with you.
Though his next move won't be in a cage, it will still be interesting to see what Miller does with his post-fighting life

Clogged Ketchup No More With MIT's 'LiquiGlide'
On Memorial Day, many of us flip burgers, spear hot dogs, and whack a ketchup bottle trying to coax a stubborn glob of the stuff out and onto the bun. Now, a team of scientists at MIT has decided that this ketchup-to-bottle adhesion is a problem that must be fixed. Melissa Block talks with doctoral MIT student Adam Paxson about a solution some researchers have developed.

MELISSA BLOCK, HOST:
This being Memorial Day, many of you have been flipping burgers, spearing hot dogs and then whacking a ketchup bottle to try to coax that stubborn glob of red stuff out onto the bun.
Well, a team of scientists at MIT has decided that this ketchup-to-bottle adhesion is a problem that must be fixed and they've come up with a solution. Adam Paxson, what's the solution called?
ADAM PAXSON: We are calling it LiquiGlide.
BLOCK: LiquiGlide. And, Adam, you're a doctoral student in mechanical engineering at MIT. You're part of this team. Why don't you explain how it works?
PAXSON: Yeah. It's a super slippery surface coating. I guess the technical jargon would be an ultra-low adhesion surface. You can make it out of a bunch of different materials, as long as they satisfy certain requirements in, like, viscosity and surface energy, but we did this huge exhaustive search to find out a way to actually make it out of food materials.
BLOCK: Food materials? What kind of food materials are we talking about and are they things that I would want to be consuming along with my ketchup?
PAXSON: Well, if you wanted to scratch this off and eat it, it would actually be completely fine. Yeah, this is stuff that is edible.
BLOCK: And can you tell me what's in it or is that a trade secret?
PAXSON: What exactly it's made of, I'm afraid I can't, actually. We're still doing some IP filings, but imagine you're chewing gum and you want to throw it out and, if you grab your gum with dry fingers, it's going to stick, but if you lick your fingers, it'll just slide right off, so that's sort of how it works.
BLOCK: Aha. Now, IP filing - you're talking about intellectual property?
PAXSON: Right.
BLOCK: You know, Adam, there's a whole mystique around the Heinz ketchup brand that was built around that excruciatingly slow slide of ketchup out of the bottle. There's a famous ad campaign from the 1970s.
(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "ANTICIPATION")
CARLY SIMON: (Singing) Anticipation.
BLOCK: It's all built around this famous Carly Simon song, "Anticipation."
(SOUNDBITE OF TV COMMERCIAL)
UNIDENTIFIED MAN: Thick, rich Heinz ketchup. The taste is worth the wait.
BLOCK: And then that tag line, the taste is worth the wait. You really are, I think, upending a whole culture here of slowness being a good thing.
PAXSON: Yeah. This is something really interesting that we found out in our market research was - they have, like, this speed gate that they run ketchup down with a little stopwatch and, if it's too fast, they, like, throw the batch away.
BLOCK: No way. Really?
PAXSON: Well, I guess it's something they stuck to for the past decades or so, so it's not our concern to upend it, but I'd rather have ketchup flow out easily than stay stuck. I don't know.
BLOCK: Well, who wants this, Adam? Who wants the ketchup to be sliding more smoothly out of the bottle?
PAXSON: So we've gotten a lot of interest from a bunch of food companies. Any time you have a really thick sauce that's hard to get out of the bottle, this helps to let it slide. So, in food mechanics, you'd call it a no-slip boundary condition.
BLOCK: A no-slip boundary condition?
PAXSON: And we can get rid of that.
BLOCK: Wow, I like that. How much bottle pounding and experimenting have you been doing along the way for this project?
PAXSON: Well, it's funny. If you open up our chemical closet and there's just a bunch of mustard and ketchup and honey spread everywhere. They have us put not for consumption labels on the food just because we're working on it in a laboratory.
BLOCK: And other uses for this substance you've come up with?
PAXSON: So my research is looking at applying it to condensers in power plants, so it's a little bit different from ketchup. I've built a little miniature power plant to test this new coating out on these surfaces.
BLOCK: But, for some reason, people seem to be more interested in hearing about the ketchup bottles.
PAXSON: They are much more interested in the ketchup. That's true.
BLOCK: Well, Adam Paxson, thanks so much for talking to us about LiquiGlide, designed to get ketchup out of the bottle faster.
PAXSON: Thank you.

Fat burning foods ? Low calorie food choices
May 28th, 2012 ?|? Published in Weight Loss Articles
Fat burning foods are those that use up more calories to digest than it actually contains.
Food such as broccoli, cabbage and green beans are just a few of the best fat burning foods available.
Even high calorie fruit such as apples, grapefruit, oranges and pineapple are fat burning foods as they use up a lot of calories when digesting them.
How to lose weight?
If you would like to lose weight then you should try and cut back on the amount of calories you consume. This will result in the stored fat being burnt for energy.
Fat burning food can help you achieve this goal as they can help fight any hunger without adding calories to your daily intake.
Fat burning drinks
There are also fat burning drinks available that can help to burn fat.
Tea and coffee are examples of fat burning drinks as they contain a large amount of caffeine.
Caffeine can cause your heart rate to rise, which in turn can raise your metabolism. A higher metabolism can help to burn off any excess calories before they are turned into fat.
Although caffeine is a good fat burner it is also addictive and can cause side effects particularly when consumed in large quantities.
Fat burning supplements
To see real fat burning results perhaps you could try a fat burning supplement such as Phen375.
It is made from clinically proven ingredients that can cause a rise in your metabolism. When looking at fat burning supplements always check the ingredients in case there is any that should be avoided.
When attempting to lose weight it is never advised to rely on a fat burning supplement. You should always try eating healthily and try a little exercise. A fat burning supplement is best used to ?supplement? your weight loss.
With a few changes to your current lifestyle and the use of a fat burning supplement like Phen375 perhaps your weight loss goals could be reached before you know it.

Report: Redbox Looks to Canada for Expansion
Citizens of the Great White North may soon be getting a Redbox kiosk in their neighborhood. Redbox is reported to be bringing its kiosks to Walmart stores across Canada, and according to a report from The Globe and Mail,?Redbox has signed an agreement with Canadian convenience store operator Alimentation Couche-Tard Inc.
Redbox interim president Gregg Kaplan is enthusiastic about the new expansion:
?Historically, a pretty good rule of thumb, what we?ve seen in other businesses is that Canada can get to roughly 1/10 the size of the U.S. market . . . We?re not projecting that yet because we haven?t had the experience there, but it feels like it could be sizable.?
Redbox?s Canadian pricing will reportedly come in 50-cents higher than U.S. pricing for DVD, Blu-ray and video game rentals.
How well do you think Redbox will fare north of the border?

Pakistani Bishop Decries Theft of Church Land
LAHORE, Pakistan, MAY 25, 2012 (Zenit.org).- A Pakistani bishop is decrying the government take-over of Church-owned land, and the destruction of properties -- including a homeless shelter -- at the site.
The center was confiscated and razed in January, Aid to the Church in Need reported.
Bishop Sebastian Francis Shaw, apostolic administrator of Lahore Archdiocese, said that the land where the center stood still had not been returned ? despite promises from the provincial government.
Talking to Aid to the Church in Need, Bishop Shaw said: ?It looks like empty promises. Even after a meeting with a government official who assured us of an immediate return, nothing happened.?
The centre in Lahore?s Garhi Shahu district housed a day centre for the elderly, a sewing school for girls and other projects run by the Church ? as well as a chapel.
Bishop Shaw said: ?If the provincial government restores the property to us, they won?t compensate us for tearing down the building. We have to pay for the reconstruction ourselves ? this is unjust.?
The government has demanded that a Church-run school be built on the land ? as a precondition for its return ? and insisted this should be financed by the diocese.
Bishop Shaw said: ?It?s not impossible that this is just another method of delaying restitution, as the government may be hoping that we can?t fulfil this condition.
?As Christians, we?re an easy victim for the government, as they don?t have to fear any outbursts of violence.?

Golf: Jason Dufner's Texas two-step ? two-stroke lead after two rounds at Colonial
FORT WORTH, Texas ? Jason Dufner lists Ben Hogan as his hero.
At Hogan's Alley, Dufner had the lead halfway through the Colonial with a chance for a Texas two-step that only Hogan has accomplished.
Dufner had a bogey-free 6-under 64 on another windy day Friday to reach 11-under 129. A week after winning the Byron Nelson Championship, Dufner had a two-stroke lead over Zach Johnson ? the 2010 winner who shot a 67.
The only player to win both PGA Tour events in the Dallas-Fort Worth market in the same year was Hogan in 1946.
"That would be great company to join, obviously," Dufner said. "To have anything compared to him or be talked in the same sentence with him is something that would be pretty unique and special to me."
With the way Dufner is playing these days, his game certainly is in a different class.
Both of Dufner's PGA Tour victories came in his previous three starts. He has led or shared the lead after 11 of his last 34 rounds.
"When I step to the first tee, I feel like I'm going to play a good round of golf. That's a nice way to play. It's a comfortable way to play," Dufner said. "I'm just trying to be confident and think about the things I've been doing for almost a year now, and realize that those are the things that are making me successful out here, and not get too caught up in everything else that's going on around me."
Johnson, who had an opening bogey-free 64, started the second round eagle-birdie-bogey. Then there was a four-hole stretch on the back nine when he alternated birdies and bogeys twice.
During the third round Saturday, Johnson will be paired with his buddy Dufner.
"He's got a good rhythm about him, about his game right now," Johnson said. "But it's irrelevant who I play with. I'm not playing against him. I'm playing against the golf course and the conditions and the elements that are presented. So that's my focus."
Two years ago, Johnson set the Colonial tournament scoring record at 21-under 259 en route to the last of his seven PGA Tour victories.
Van Pelt (64) and Tommy Gainey (67) were tied for third at 133, a stroke better than Tom Gillis (69).
Defending Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial champion David Toms shot a 71 and missed the cut at 5-over 145.
David Hearn of Brantford, Ont., just made the cut at 143 with rounds of 71 and 72.
Graham DeLaet of Weyburn, Sask., shot a 72 to finish at 144 and miss the cut.
With the wind again blowing steady about 20 mph with higher gusts, Dufner stood in the middle of the fairway at No. 5, his 14th hole of the day. Dufner stepped back twice before changing clubs, then hit the approach to about 18 feet for his sixth and last birdie.
That is the end of Colonial's "horrible horseshoe" ? as Nos. 3-5 are known because of their layout and with the longest par 4s sandwiching a 243-yard par 3.
Dufner has played those holes 4 under through two rounds, and wasn't even aware of the trio's reputation.
"It's just a product of playing well and having good control of my golf ball," he said. "It doesn't really matter what holes you're playing."
Starting on the back nine, Dufner had two birdies, a 5-footer at the 166-yard 13th hole and 7-footer at the 363-yard 17th. He then birdied Nos. 1-3 for the second day in a row.
"I got off to a great start. ... I had a chance to catch Dufner, is he not hot right now," said Gainey, who opened his round with three consecutive birdies before bogeys at Nos. 7 and 8. "I got hot and then let a couple get away."
After Colonial, Dufner ? who got married between his two victories ? plans to take a short break before beginning preparations for the next major. The U.S. Open is in three weeks at The Olympic Club in San Francisco.
The 35-year-old Dufner, who has moved up to 14th in the world, had consecutive weekend rounds of 75 at the Masters and tied for 24th after starting 69-70.
It was during the final round of the PGA Championship last August when Dufner had consecutive bogeys on holes No. 15-17. That cost him the lead and forced him into a three-hole playoff that he lost to Keegan Bradley.
"I think it helped me out a lot this year. It kind reaffirmed the things that I was doing was right, and I was on the right direction and right path," he said. "I didn't think too much about losing. I just thought about all of the good things that happened. ... I think at the PGA kind of showed me that I could really play at a high level."
Divots: Sergio Garcia, the '01 Colonial champ, followed his opening 66 with a 73. That included an 8 on the 387-yard ninth hole when he hit his approach into the water fronting the green, and then knocked his drop in there as well. ... Ben Crane (141), who lives just north of Fort Worth, finished his second-round 71 with an eagle at the ninth hole. He holed a wedge shot from 104 yards. ... Harrison Frazar missed the cut with rounds of 72 and 74. He still had a highlight Friday, a hole-in-one with an 8-iron at the 183-yard 16th. ... The last of 14 players to win both the Colonial and Byron Nelson Championship was Rory Sabbatini, at the 2007 Colonial and 2009 Nelson. When Hogan did it in 1946, the tournaments weren't played in consecutive weeks.

Definitions of Debt Management
From layman's perspective, debt management is simply what it literally implies. It refers to the process by which one manages his debts in a manner that he would not be put in a position where he would have difficulties in repaying these. Apparently, debt management in this regard is one that is being conducted in order to prevent problems from arising in the future. Because this involves money which would be used to repay the debts, it naturally requires the individuals to be mindful of these when allocating funds for the different expenses he will have to cover in a month.?
The term debt management is also often used by the government.? This is particularly carried out by a country's fiscal managers.? It is a known fact that countries also incur domestic and foreign debts, which are usually triggered by trade imbalances. Of course, a government would not allow debt problems to grow worse, especially because these would seriously hurt the economy.
It is in this regard, that the government would resort to debt management.? The aim is to establish certain measures that would make it possible for the government to reduce the burden created by the debt and lessen its impact on the economy.?In both definitions mentioned above, it is clear that debt management is considered as a solution.? It is applied in order to prevent problems resulting from delinquent debt payments and, in the case of countries, to create protection for the economy from the effects of debts.? The other definition of debt management, however, is one that refers to it as recourse whenever the debtor is no longer in a position to repay the debts that he had incurred.? In this regard, avoiding the problems is no longer possible because the debtor is already saddled by it.? All that he can do now is to seek ways to reduce the amount of his obligations to levels that he can afford.
Debt management services offered by certain companies help distressed debtors deal with their problems.? Counselors are sent to meet with the client debtors in order to study their respective situations.? The objective of the studies is to arrive at conclusions that would then become bases for the concrete steps to be taken in order to manage debts.? One of the key resolutions would certainly be to make the creditors agree to proposals that certain charges or fees are removed so that the value of the debts would become more manageable for the debtor.
In all the definitions mentioned here, it is obvious that debt management does not mean escaping from the obligation of repaying.? A debtor who implements this does not have any intention to free himself from his obligations to the creditor.? Therefore, the creditor should not worry about debt management too.? ?What debt management does is definitely beneficial to both the debtor and the creditor.?? It enables the debtor to solve his problems while it allows the creditors to get what is due to them.

While GOP Pledges Austerity, Democrats Hesitant To Revamp Medicare, Medicaid
Health care continues to play a major role this political season. News outlets look at the parties' differences on spending, Sen. Baucus' early reelection calculations and a protest against Rep. Steve King.
The Fiscal Times: GOP Bets On Austerity To Lead Them To Victory
The Obama administration and Democratic congressional leaders have repeatedly called for a "balanced" approach to economic expansion and deficit reduction -- including targeted stimulus spending, overall government belt tightening and an increase in taxes on the wealthiest Americans -- to help contain the deficit in the coming decade.? While Democrats say they are open to discussing changes in Medicare, Medicaid and other entitlement programs for the elderly and poor, they are highly critical of anything that would alter the fundamental structure of the costly health care programs (Pianin, 5/24).
Politico: Baucus Faces The Biggest Campaigns Of His Career
Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus is about to launch two of the most daunting campaigns of his political career at once: first, to rewrite the U.S. Tax Code, then to win reelection in 2014 after having shepherded the controversial Democratic health care law to passage. ... The 70-year-old Baucus appears to be taking little for granted. ... Baucus sidestepped a fight over health care by punting on a confirmation hearing for Marilyn Tavenner, a nominee to head the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services, which he said was unnecessary because of her lack of support (Raju and Bresnahan, 5/24).
National Journal: Nurses Endorse Obama
The American Nurses Association endorsed President Obama on Thursday. The group said the 2010 health reform law was the deciding factor. "Increasing access to care and transforming the American health care system from one that focuses on illness care to a system that emphasizes prevention, wellness, and care coordination have been ANA's priorities for more than two decades.? ANA remains committed to supporting President Obama's efforts to fully implement and fund the Affordable Care Act," ANA President Karen Daley said in a statement (5/24).
Des Moines Register: Man Calls Steve King A 'Professional Liar,' Is Removed From Event
A man who called Steve King a liar, homophobe and xenophobe at an event in Mason City today was escorted from the event by police. King, a U.S. Representative from western Iowa being challenged by Democrat Christie Vilsack, has consistently criticized federal health care reform for the past two years. He recently said it will result in fewer people being insured, which health care advocates say is inaccurate (Clayworth, 5/22).

Contrasting Types and Materials of Home Eavestrough
No one can refute how much an eavestrough or rain gutter system plays a part in the condition of a house. Present day rain gutters have been developed specifically to fit home decor and the majority of commercially ready kinds come in notable components such as aluminum and vinyl. However, there are Toronto homes that use interesting and unique gutters that appear quite different from traditional products on the market.
Commercially available vinyls may come in different shapes, like U and K, and materials like galvanized steel, aluminum, and vinyl. The most significant function of these rain gutters would be to route runoff water from the roofing to protect against damage to the home as a result of stagnant water in the substrate. while most gutters today are utilized for their efficiency more than their design purposes, there are still homeowners that make design and uniqueness a main concern. The following are a handful of of the most unique rain gutters that you can still observe in modern-day Toronto houses:
Copper Rain Gutters
Eavesthrough gutters which appear in a yellow gloss are likely crafted from copper. While copper rain gutters are very costly to produce and set up, they are seldom seen in typical homes. Then again, copper gutters require hardly any maintenance and so are immune to decay; all they require are tailor-made sealants, and it would last for years.
Steel Systems
An excellent replacement for copper in creating eavestroughs is steel. Although there are tons of metal rain gutters available to property owners, these are typically made from galvanized steel or aluminum. Stainless steel gutters are rust-resistant and do not ought to be given something to preserve its shimmer. The only drawback is, like copper gutter systems, it is very costly to set up.
Box Gutters
Box gutters are heavy-duty eavestrough systems which are set up straight into the base of a roof rather than clinging from the sides, similar to most present day rain gutters are. A box eavestrough Toronto has are found in classic structures and properties, especially those that were constructed between the late 1800s to the early 1900s. This sort of gutters is utilized when prioritizing functionality over design.
Wood Gutters
Wood gutters, typically created from old growth cedar, are exceptionally hard to find. A Toronto eavestrough system produced from wood would generally be identified in older homes or restorations. Old growth cedar is quite resistant to deterioration, but it is very difficult to find, which makes it a pricey material for house gutter structures.
If you're utilizing systems like these, as well as present day rain gutter structures that nearly all houses have today, you should have numbers of Toronto roof repair firms on hand, in case of issues. For additional information, you can visit ehow.com/list_7563966_unique-types-gutters.html or usraingutter.com/different-gutter-systems.html.

CANNES, France (AP) ? Kristen Stewart understands the lure of the open road. So do her "On The Road" co-stars, Garrett Hedlund and Sam Riley.
The three young actors play the central love triangle in Walter Salles' adaptation of Jack Kerouac's Beat Generation novel, an experience that has helped them appreciate why the book is considered a classic.
The tale of wannabe writer (and Kerouac surrogate) Sal Paradise and his friend Dean Moriarty crisscrossing the United States in search of freedom and the elusive "it" was published in 1957. But Stewart said the way it captures the heady feeling of young adulthood is timeless.
"You're so filled with something that is hard to identify at this age," said the "Twilight" star, who plays Dean's teenage bride Marylou, a free spirit torn between the lure of adventure and desire for a more settled life.
"You're just bursting, and (the characters) value that so much," said Stewart, who is just 22 herself. "They don't ignore it. That celebration of youth and exploration is just something that you envy.
"I read it right at the point when I was about to get my (driver's) license, and I thought, wow, I want to meet people who push me the way people push each other. I wanted to be more like them."
Minnesota-born Hedlund ("Troy," ''Tron: Legacy") plays the carnal, vital Moriarty, a character modeled on Kerouac's friend Neal Cassady. He said some things have changed since Kerouac wrote his freewheeling, impressionistic story,
"Back then a car was 100 bucks and all you had to choose between was a radio and a heater, and things seemed a little freer," said the 27-year-old actor. "The roads seemed more open than they are today, but a young person's ambitions are still the same. Everybody between the ages of 17 and 21 or 22 still feels that they can achieve anything they want in life if they are ambitious enough."
"On the Road," which premiered this week at the Cannes Film Festival, has been a long time coming. Kerouac, who died in 1969, hoped to see his book filmed, and actors linked to an adaptation over the decades range from Marlon Brando to Brad Pitt.
Brazilian director Salles, who made the Che Guevara road movie "The Motorcycle Diaries," has been involved since 2004, spending years interviewing surviving Beat Generation figures for an unreleased documentary on the book.
He finally got the go-ahead, with Francis Ford Coppola's son Roman Coppola producing, to shoot a film whose fourth main character is the American landscape ? though Salles had to travel far and wide to recreate the 1940s U.S. setting. The movie was shot in Canada, Chile and Mexico as well as the United States.
The film opened in France this week and is due for a fall release in the U.S.
The actors felt the weight of expectation from the book's millions of fans, but say it helped them form a bond ? albeit one less erotically entangled than that of their characters.
"We were the only people there who really know and understand what it feels like to be gifted, or burdened, with the responsibility of playing these characters," said Riley, whose breakthrough role was as Joy Division singer Ian Curtis in "Control." ''So we really did have that sort of feeling that we're separate from the others.
"Garrett and I particularly spent six months in one another's pockets," said the 32-year-old British actor. "I have friends where I don't know if I could spend that much time with them. And for a Yorkshireman and a lad from Minnesota ? two young actors who both have their own ambitions ? it could have been an absolute disaster, a clash of egos. But Garrett was always there for me to lean on, and vice versa."
Salles had firm ideas about the actors he wanted for the film. The cast includes Kirsten Dunst, "Mad Men's Elisabeth Moss, Amy Adams, Tom Sturridge and Viggo Mortensen as characters inspired by real-life Beat generation figures.
"I felt like it was cheating or something, that we had the best cast, in my mind, that's ever been assembled," Hedlund said. "Maybe there was something about each and every one of us that was similar to him in a way, to (explain) why we got along the way he did. There was no rotten egg within the bunch, and that's so rare."
The director said he was determined to cast Stewart even before "Twilight" made her a star, after he heard raves about her performance in the Sean Penn's 2007 Alaskan drama "Into The Wild."
"I remember writing down the name," Salles said, "so I wouldn't forget it."

Drug Abuse: Health and Fitness: Drug Abuse Article Category
The adverse effects of smoking can be quite widespread. Smokers usually experience a decrease in their ability to take in and use oxygen effectively, which means that they will have less physical stamina than nonsmokers. When they do exercise, they will likely only be able to do so for short periods of time. Although some of the harmful effects that are associated with smoking can be reversed, men and women will have to carefully give up the habit and stay away from cigarettes in the following years.
Most medical experts agree that smoking also leads to a range of diseases, some of which can be fatal. Cancer is the most obvious one. Tobacco contains a number of carcinogens that can change the genetic material within cells over time. Eventually, this can lead to mutations and malignant tumors. Beyond cancer, however, smokers are also more likely to develop diabetes and even heart disease. If heart disease is already prominent within the family, cigarettes will only exacerbate the risk. Significant hardening of the arteries can eventually lead to a coronary event, which can be potentially life-threatening. Smokers who find that they have high blood pressure or high cholesterol may be strongly advised by their doctors to make a serious attempt to break the habit.
If men and women enjoy certain physical activities, they may find that years of smoking may prevent them from doing these. For instance, running, swimming, and backpacking all require strong and healthy lungs. Because smoking breaks down the lung components over time, smokers will tire quite easily. A few laps in the pool may become an extreme physical event. If individuals have also been diagnosed with asthma, smoking can make this condition much worse. They will likely have to carry an inhaler with them at all times. In the most extreme cases, people may require an oxygen tank to help them breathe. Deficiencies within the both the respiratory and circulatory systems are common with lifelong smokers.
Ultimately, the effects of smoking can be quite profound over time. Men and women will find themselves confined to their homes more and more. Though they may still be able to manage some shorter bursts of physical energy, they will likely be out of breath when they finish. As their physicians will also remind them, they will also be more likely to develop several serious health conditions. Most specialists now agree, in fact, that smoking is the primary cause of lung cancer in individuals of all ages. Despite all this, there are effective treatment plans that can help people finally break the habit.

Intel research hopes to give computers human smarts, appreciate our idiosyncrasies
Intel's chief technology officer, Justin Rattner, doesn't own a smartphone. Well, not by his definition anyway. Talking in Tel Aviv, Rattner was evangelizing about the opportunities in machine learning, and outlining the goals of the firm's Collaborative Research Institute for Computational Intelligence. Working with Technion and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Intel plans to develop small, wearable computers that learn our behavioral patterns -- like where we left our keys -- and other things today's "smart" phones could never do. Intel's Israeli president, Mooly Eden, went on to claim that within five years, all five senses will be computerized, and in a decade, transistors per chip will outnumber neurons in the human brain. All that tech to stop you locking yourself out.

Can Soil Sensors Save Georgia Waterways from Drought?
An innovative effort would embed sensors in agricultural fields in a bid to cut down on irrigation--saving farmers money and preserving water for endangered species

By June 15 gasoline-powered augers will have drilled 100 holes in the corn, cotton and peanut fields of the Lower Flint River Basin in southwest Georgia. Into the holes, scientists from the University of Georgia (U.G.A.) will slip half-meter-long PVC pipes filled with sensors for soil moisture and temperature topped with a flexible antenna that can be run over by a tractor and spring back into place. Over the course of the next two years, these sensors will continuously relay soil conditions from 20, 40 and 60 centimeters deep to a computer. Combined with more accurate weather forecasts, the data will help farmers decide where and when to use their irrigation systems.
"The biggest problem we've got with irrigation is we just don't know?we use old wives' tales to decide when to irrigate," says farmer Marty Tabb, who will host the probes in a field at his 1,050-hectare Bushwater Farm near Colquitt, Ga., to help him irrigate corn, cotton and peanut crops. In addition to saving water (agriculture is responsible for 70 percent of human water use globally), the technology can also help produce more crop per drop. "Using the simplest soil monitor and a computer program, my peanut yields jumped 20 percent," Tabb reports. "I know, just from that, that if we learn how to water corn, cotton, wheat, we can save water because we tend to overwater."
Overwatering is a major problem in the Lower Flint River Basin, which lies in a region that has been gripped by drought so severe in recent years that it prompted the former governor of Georgia to pray for rain. The region produces the most peanuts and pecans in the nation, as well as vast quantities of cotton and sweet corn. And the Lower Flint River Basin is the major recharge zone for the Floridan Aquifer that supplies water to Florida, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, South Carolina and Georgia, as well as the home of several endangered freshwater species, such as the flatwoods salamander and the oval pigtoe mussel.
Farmers in the Flint River Basin have a direct impact on this groundwater resource, because waters on the surface and belowground are directly linked: a hurricane's downpour in the area can replenish the aquifer, whereas too much pumping of underground water to irrigate fields can literally suck the water out of surface rivers and streams. "Because of the drought and because of us irrigating, we have pulled water down, and the springs along Spring Creek don't pump anymore," Tabb says of the Flint River tributary in his backyard. "You couldn't have told me that creek would ever dry, but I drove my motorcycle two miles down Spring Creek because it was so dry."
In a bid to cut down on that water use?while maintaining the more than $2 billion worth of corn, cotton, peanut and other crop production in the region?the Nature Conservancy and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, along with U.G.A. and the University of Florida, teamed with more than 1,000 local farmers starting in 2000. The partnership started by switching some irrigation systems from high pressure mists to a low pressure system that more directly mimicked rain, saving water and energy. When applying at high pressure "you lose water to wind drift and also evaporation," explains David Reckford, director of this Flint River Basin Partnership for the Conservancy. The switch to a low pressure system alone can reduce water use by more than 22 percent.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Secret Service Director Mark Sullivan says his officers' contact with prostitutes at a Colombian hotel last month produced no breach of national security plans for President Barack Obama's visit to the South American country.
"At the time the misconduct occurred, none of the individuals involved ... had received any specific protective information, sensitive security documents, firearms, radios or other security related equipment in their hotel rooms," Sullivan said in testimony prepared for his first public accounting Wednesday of the humiliating scandal that tarnished the historic agency. The officers, he added, had not yet received their briefing on Obama's attendance at a Latin American summit in the coastal resort of Cartagena.
But senators on the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee set to hear from Sullivan still have concerns and questions, chiefly about whether the night of heavy drinking and paid sex was an isolated incident and how it may have exposed the Secret Service employees to blackmail.
"This reckless behavior could easily have compromised individuals charged with the security of the president of the United States," Maine Sen. Susan Collins, the panel's top Republican, said in her own prepared remarks. "This misconduct was almost certainly not an isolated incident."
"I want to hear what the Secret Service is doing to encourage people to report egregious behavior when they see it," Sen. Joe Lieberman, the committee's chairman, said.
Their comments highlight the widespread skepticism Sullivan is likely to face as he recounts the unclassified results of his internal investigation alongside Charles K. Edwards, acting inspector general of the Homeland Security Department.
But don't expect lawmakers to demand Sullivan's walking papers.
At a time when Republicans and Democrats agree on few matters, they appear united on letting Sullivan keep his job. The Secret Service boss ousted many of the supervisors and officers involved in the scandal, allowed Edwards to monitor his own investigation and kept key lawmakers in the loop.
The White House on Tuesday reasserted its confidence in Sullivan.
Obama "has great faith in the Secret Service, believes the director has done an excellent job," White House spokesman Jay Carney said. "The director moved very quickly to have this matter investigated and took action very quickly as a result of that investigation."
The sordid affair became public following a morning-after argument April 12 between a Secret Service officer and a prostitute over payment for her services at a Cartagena hotel. The Secret Service was in the city in preparation for the summit.
The Senate Homeland Security Committee is the first congressional committee to hold an oversight hearing and Lieberman, I-Conn., was expected to frame it tightly around one question: Was the cavorting with prostitutes and rampant drinking a lone incident or agency tradition in far-flung locales?
Lieberman told reporters Tuesday that his committee received details from the agency that raise questions about whether the Secret Service "had reason to see this coming." He declined to be more specific.
A dozen Secret Service officers and supervisors and 12 other U.S. military personnel were implicated. Eight Secret Service employees, including two supervisors, have lost their jobs. The Secret Service is moving to permanently revoke the security clearance for one other employee, and three others have been cleared of serious wrongdoing.
Prostitution is legal in Colombia, but Sullivan quickly issued new guidelines that made it clear that agency employees on assignment overseas are subject to U.S. laws.
Interviews in the six weeks since the incident revealed widespread suspicion among lawmakers that the Cartagena incident was not isolated, and officials familiar with Wednesday's hearing expected tough questions about how Sullivan ruled out the possibility of more parties.
In his testimony, Sullivan said he directed agency inspectors to investigate a tale of similar misconduct in San Salvador. After 28 interviews with hotel employees and managers, State Department officials and others, "no evidence was found to substantiate the allegations," Sullivan said in the prepared remarks.
There also have been reports of other incidents, some dating back to the Clinton administration.
"I will give the director the benefit of the doubt and listen to his testimony," Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., said.
This week the Drug Enforcement Administration said the Justice Department's inspector general was investigating possible misconduct by two or more DEA agents in Colombia. That probe is unrelated to the Secret Service scandal, but is based on information provided to the DEA by the Secret Service.
